Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring has long been valued for its natural beauty, durability, and versatility, making it a popular choice among homeowners and designers alike. With various types, installation methods, and numerous benefits, hardwood flooring continues to be a premium option for anyone looking to enhance the value and aesthetic appeal of their space. Windsor Hardwood International, Inc., a leading manufacturer in the industry, offers a wide range of high-quality hardwood flooring options that cater to diverse tastes and design needs. Here’s everything you need to know about hardwood flooring, from types and benefits to installation methods.

Types of Hardwood Flooring

Solid Hardwood Flooring: Solid hardwood flooring is crafted from a single piece of natural wood, making it both durable and highly sought-after. Available in different wood species such as oak, maple, and cherry, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times, extending its lifespan. However, solid hardwood is more susceptible to moisture, which makes it best suited for areas with low humidity.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring: Engineered hardwood consists of a thin layer of real hardwood on top of multiple layers of high-quality plywood. This construction makes it more stable and resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, making it a great option for basements and kitchens. Windsor Hardwood International, Inc. specializes in a range of engineered hardwood options that offer the beauty of solid wood with added resilience.

Exotic Hardwood Flooring: For those seeking a unique aesthetic, exotic hardwoods like Brazilian cherry, tigerwood, and teak bring distinctive colors and grain patterns. Exotic hardwoods are often denser and more durable, making them resistant to wear, although they can be more challenging to source and may require special care.

Reclaimed Hardwood Flooring: Reclaimed hardwood flooring repurposes wood from old structures and gives it new life in residential spaces. This type of hardwood not only provides an environmentally friendly option but also adds unique character, as each plank may show distinctive age and wear patterns. Windsor Hardwood International, Inc. offers reclaimed wood products to bring sustainable and one-of-a-kind options to homeowners.

Ways to Install Hardwood Flooring

  • Nail-Down Installation: Nail-down installation is a traditional method, often used for solid hardwood. It involves nailing the wood planks directly into the subfloor, making it a secure and lasting choice. This method is best for plywood subfloors and can be more labor-intensive, so professional installation is often recommended.
  • Glue-Down Installation: Suitable for engineered and solid hardwood, glue-down installation uses adhesives to secure planks to the subfloor. This method is ideal for concrete subfloors and provides additional sound insulation. Glue-down installation is commonly used in high-rise buildings or multi-story homes for its sound-dampening qualities.
  • Floating Installation: Floating installation involves locking the hardwood planks together without fastening them to the subfloor. This technique is quick and easy, often used for engineered hardwood, and allows the flooring to expand and contract naturally with humidity changes. Floating floors are ideal for do-it-yourself projects, as they require minimal tools and expertise.
  • Staple-Down Installation: Staple-down installation is similar to the nail-down method but uses staples instead of nails to secure the planks. This option is generally quicker and easier than nailing and is suitable for both solid and engineered hardwood. It’s commonly used with thinner flooring planks for added stability.

Hardwood Flooring FAQs

Q: Is your house light and bright with high ceilings, white walls, and big windows? Or is it shaded, with small windows and small rooms?
A: This tells us whether we want to consider lighter or darker wood species. Lighter woods will make the space feel larger while darker woods will tend to make the space feel smaller.

Q: What sort of heating system is used in your home?
A: Radiant or non-humidifies hot air requires dimensionally stable wood. Engineered flooring is the best choice in these situations. Solid hardwood requires great humidification in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

Q: Do you have kids or own any large pets?
A: Hardness can be an issue even in “hardwoods.” Birch, Walnut, and Cherry may be fine in some homes or rooms, while others may require more durable woods such as Maple, Hickory, or tropical hardwoods like Brazilian Cherry or Santos Mahogany.

Q: How crazy will it make you to see spaces between the boards next winter?
A: To eliminate the issues with gapping engineered flooring is recommended as it will not move like solid wood flooring. An 8”engineered plank will should virtually no gapping while and 8” solid plank may gap up to 1/16” during the winter months.

Q: Are there other wood floors in your house?
A: Red Oak contrast nicely with Brazilian Cherry, while Walnut and White Oak complement each other. Red Oak and White Oak make it look like you tried to match species and failed. We want to match or find a compatible contrast.

Q: Do you want to check out overstock and overruns?
A: There is always something available that is sold at less than list. We typically have 10,000 sf of various overrun or “rejected” flooring available. Check our inventory page or call for more info as the stock changes daily.

Q: How long will my project take? When are payments expected? Do you deliver?
A: We generally work 3-4 weeks out. Call to confirm this. We take a 50% deposit with your order, and the rest is due on delivery. We can make arrangements to have your flooring delivered anywhere in the country and abroad.
